The first successful IVF birth occurred in 1978 and the first successful IVF birth in the United States was in 1981. In 2010 Robert G. Edwards, the doctor who developed the treatment, was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine. The entire process of IVF is very stressful. It is our intention at The Center for Reproductive Medicine to help make this experience as stress free as possible so we have created several pages which should help you understand the IVF process and answer as many of your questions as we possibly can about the procedure. The nurses and embryologists are always available to answer your question so please don't hesitate to call us during our office hours. |

In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) is a method of assisted reproductive technology (ART) in which an egg or many eggs are
fertilized by sperm outside the body, or in vitro. IVF is a treatment option when other methods of assisted
reproductive technology (i.e. Intra Uterine Insemination or IUI) have failed. The process involves hormonally
controlling the ovulatory process, removing eggs from the woman's ovaries and letting sperm fertilize them in a
fluid medium or we can perform a process called Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) where the sperm is
injected into the egg by the embryologist then placed in the fluid medium for development. After several
days of development in vitro the fertilized egg is then transferred to the patient's uterus with the intent
to establish a successful pregnancy.
